Western Australian Premier's Book Awards - 2001 Judging Panel

Dr Simon Adams

Dr Simon Adams was educated at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) where he majored in politics and history and won the 1993 History Prize for his honours thesis. While undertaking Ph.D research, in 1995 Dr. Adams was attached to the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa, where he worked with former political prisoners in Soweto. After completing his Ph.D Dr Adams lectured in the School of History and was Senior Fellow of Basser College at UNSW. A specialist in Australian and Irish history, as well as international politics, Dr Adams has published academic work in all these areas. His most recent book, "Exit Wounds: Murder, Diaspora and the Irish Troubles", received critical acclaim and in July 2000 Dr Adams was the first Australian to be invited to act as an International Peace Observer for the disputed "marching season" in Northern Ireland. He writes regularly for newspapers and magazines and is also a regular political commentator on ABC radio and television. At Notre Dame University in Fremantle, Dr Adams is a Senior Lecturer in politics and history, and Head of the School of Arts & Letters.

Mr Zoltan Kovacs

Zoltan Kovacs is the Issues editor and chief editorial writer for The West Australian. He started in journalism 36 years ago and has worked as a feature writer, specialist reporter on education and Aboriginal affairs, reviewer of books, plays and jazz, and government media officer. He has edited two books by Western Australian authors.

Ms Jill Midolo

During her 30-year career as a Teacher Librarian, Jill Midolo has always been vitally concerned with the promotion of books and reading. She currently writes and edits curriculum journals, annotated bibliographies and Web content for Curriculum Materials Information Services Evaluation at the Education Department of Western Australia. She has completed a two-year term as the WA judge for the Children's Book Council annual awards.

Professor Vijay Mishra

Vijay Mishra is Professor of English and Comparative Literature and Head of the School of Arts at Murdoch University. During 1998-99 he was Professor of English at the University of Alberta, Canada. He has doctorates from the Australian National University and Oxford, and is the author of many books and articles on literature, aesthetics, cultural studies and film theory. Professor Mishra is the chairperson of the 2001 judging panel.
